So today, we will give few tips and guideline on how to prepare yourself before starting to build a fashion line or brand. During such uncertain time of the year, many designer and emerging brands have been asking about whether right now is a good time to launch or start their own fashion line and since there is no guarantee whether a new fashion business will success or fail in any given time. The best option is to do lots of research and pay attention to what is happening around this time in order to remain alert and focused. The very early stage before any development or sampling, should be target market research. Whether you are doing this as a one-time project or long term investment for a full fledge business, knowing your targeted market and customer is key to any start up business. If you have a very clear vision about your design or brand, make sure it is thoroughly communicated as early as possible because the more clear your design or concept is, the easier and more cost effective it will be during early development stages. Many clients wasted huge amount of money and time in multiple rounds of samples and fabric because the initial concept was not planned out properly. So in order to avoid any delay or wastage, we assist clients to plan out their development and production schedule and cost as early as possible. Once you have done enough research on which market to target and who your potential customers are, the next stage to think about is fabric. Most of the time, fabric should be the most important factor that needs to be researched and sourced before any stage and it is the most important deciding element on how your design will look like and how much will it cost. The cost and quality of fabric is one of the most essential elements that will heavily influence the wholesale or retail price of your design. For example, if you are planning to launch a casual lounge collection mainly targeting stay home moms, but don’t want to sell for more than $50 for a top, then you will need to focus on knits fabric such as baby French terry, micro model jersey, CVC which is also known as cotton poly blend. These types of fabric stretch and drapes well at the same time provides great comfort and softness to the body. Once you narrow down your fabric direction, you should start thinking about design details like what kind of body or silhouette to use, constructions details, closure using zipper or buttons or others, whether to add embroidery or printing to the design and etc. It is very important to communicate all your ideas to the development team or factory so they have clear instruction and how to make your design into reality. At the same time, development director from the factory will provide suggestions and guidance on how to make the design more cost effective and less wasteful based on their experience and expertise. In general, the early consultation stage for any new client is very key and the more prepared you are with research and design details, the easier and faster it will be to get pricing breakdown and lead time schedule, which we will discuss in full detail in separate videos.
